Ninth East Coast Trail Tely Hike on beautiful Sugarloaf Path

2008 East Coast Trail Tely Hike a Major Success

The ninth East Coast Trail Tely Hike was a huge success on 18 October, 2009 with proceeds of more than $46,000 from hikers and corporate donors. The day dawned cool and clear for perfect hiking conditions on the beautiful Sugarloaf Path. More than 130 hikers on 30 teams hit the hillsides from Logy Bay to Quidi Vidi and capped off the event with a Silent Auction that took in more than $4,400.

  • The High Maintenance Maniacs topped the team fundraising effort for the second year in a row with a whopping $10,270. Special thanks to Cougar Helicopters for the team's prize ride on November 23rd
  • Second place team (and, we hear, a challenger for the top spot in '09) was Wally's Walking Warriors from Wal Mart who netted more than $5,300. Game on! This year they received map sets from the ECTA, and our heartfelt thanks.
  • Erika Merschrod was our 2008 Top Individual fundraiser, bringing in $1,583, although Wilf Ayre, last year's champion was hot on her heels, at $1565 in donations. Whew, that was close! Thanks to the Outfitter's on Water Street and Bears Cove Inn and Ice Meadows Bed and Breakfast for the wonderful prizes. Perhaps we should have had a third place prize for this category because Angie O'Brien brought in $1,530…an amazing effort by all three hikers.
  • The Grand Prize draw of a trip for two courtesy of Westjet was won by Shawn Kelly of Wally's Warriors.

A great big thank you to everyone who donated, hiked, volunteered and generally supported the effort. Watch the website for more details and be sure to support the corporate donors who generously gave their goods and services to make our event a great big success! Special thanks to the Telegram for the support, publicity, entering a team and 'being there' for us once again.
