Eighth Annual East Coast Trail Tely Hike
And
Official Opening of Sugarloaf Path

TELY HIKE 2007 BOOTS IT UP!

Thanks to all who participated in our annual East Coast Trail Association "Tely Hike 2007". Thanks to each and every person who donated, collected, hiked and purchased goods as part of our most successful fundraiser hike ever! We plan to do it bigger and better next year.

On Saturday, 20 October 2007 you raised:

  • $23,483 in hiker donations
  • $3,500 from corporate sources, and realized
  • $2,786 from sales on a silent auction

For a whopping total of $29,760 at this year's event conducted from the Royal Canadian Legion on the Boulevard in St. John's. Watch for an ad in the Telegram, our major sponsor, thanking members of the business community for donating goods and services. Please support the companies whose logos appear in this ad.

In addition, ExxonMobil dropped by the event with a donation of $10,000 which the company had promised before the Tely event went ahead, so our fundraising tally this year has exceeded expectations!

Here are some other fantastic numbers:

We registered 28 teams and 43 individuals for a total of 228 hikers on the beautiful and brand new Sugarloaf Path, Logy Bay to Quidi Vidi Village.

Top fundraising teams were the:

  • MAINTENANCE MANIACS! who brought in $6,222.64
  • Hiking and Adventure Club , with donations of $2,568.45
  • Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro Team # 1, with donations of $ 2,414.22
  • Memorial University Faculty of Business, with $1,889.00

Top individual fundraisers were: (also a member of a team)

  • Wilf Ayre, $1,250.00 (MAINTENANCE MANIACS!)
  • Keith Pike, $1,200.00 (Hiking and Adventure Club)
  • Angie O'Brien, $1,020.25 (MAINTENANCE MANIACS!)
  • Janny VanHouwelingen, $900.00 (MAINTENANCE MANIACS!)

The Grand Prize was won by hiker/fundraiser Keith Pike: a trip for two anywhere in Canada with West Jet.

Again, thanks for all your hard work - it really showed on October 20th. Showcasing the marvelous Sugarloaf Path was a testament to the creativity and hard work of our paid and volunteer crews, the government funding agencies who stepped up to the plate over the past two years and the engineers who helped us out.

Don't forget to deliver the charitable receipts to all your hike team pledgers, and, as hiker and author Mary Smyth who chaired the event would say:

"See you on the trails..."
